A Busshi (Buddhist sculptor) in Nagoya, Japan. Trained Buddhist carving in Kyoto.
Shomyo makes not only traditional buddha images, but also statues in his characteristic style.
Almost all his works are made by 'Ichiboku zukuri' or Single-Block Carving.
Member of 'Nikki kai' Artist Group.

Biography
1947 Born in Gero (Gifu pref.)
1971 Studied Buddhist carving at the atelier of Busshi Eri Sohei in Kyoto
1978 Award-winner at Kyoto Traditional Craft Competition
1979 Trained himself alone in the Hida mountains to perfect his carving skills.
1983 Moves to nagoya
1984 Married and subsequently Traveled abroad Annually to study Buddhist art (Asian countries U.S.A and European various countries)
1986 Presented his first Exhibition at own studio
1989 His personal workshop was built and named Shomyoan
1991 Exhibition at Mitsukoshi Art Gallery, Nagoya
1992 Exhibition at Parche , Shizuoka
1994 Invited by the Korean National University of Education for a lecture
1995 Received the Jukai (Buddhist Precepts) from Kotani Hosho the head priest of Fukudenji Temple. He was then Given the Buddhist name of Gaun Shomyo'
He also Published the book Raihai butsu no Bi on that year
Exhibition at Yumemido, Nagoya
2000 Received his ordination from Master Ogura Soshun, head Priest of the Zuisenji Temple.
2006 Published 'Raihaibutsu no Bi 2'
2007 Opened the second Shomyoan workshop
